This article is about the need for feedback to hospitals about their rates of OB complications compared to others. What I took away from this article from it is absolute horror that US hospitals are doing so poorly.

While I am generally not a trend setter, in one trend that I have been on the cutting edge is planned home birth in NY's Capital District. Here is the most recent Center of Disease Control report on the increase in out of hospital birth.

Genetic tests for the unborn

An article in Medscape discusses the cutting edge of prenatal genetic tesing. Since fetal DNA is in the maternal blood stream during pregnancy, it is theoretically possible to test for various disorders in the unborm human. A maternal blood test for the presence of Down Syndrome in the fetus is currently available (MaterniT 21). It looks like more noninvasive genetic testing is on the horizon.

Most heterosexually active women use some form of birth control. This may not be news but this report from the CDC reviewing US contraceptive use for three decades is hot off the press.

FDA MedWatch: Vicam Extreme Relief Nasal Gel Recall

One vial of Vicam nasal gel was found to be contaminated and the FDA has recalled an entire lot. Pregnant women, young child and other sensitive populations such as people with Cystic Fibrous might want to avoid this product for the time being.
